ETHICAL WILLS

What Is an Ethical Will?

An ethical will is a statement of deeply held personal values. It can be included as an addendum to a legal will, or it can stand alone as a testament to your core beliefs. Ethical wills are a touching way to convey to your family and friends the principles and qualities most important to you.

Ethical Wills: Sample Excerpts

A mother writing to her daughter:

I’ve told you this before, but I hope you know how very proud I am of you for your commitment to animal rights. The animals cannot speak for themselves. You have been their eloquent advocate from the time you were a tiny child. I admire and respect you for taking on this important work, and I hope that your children follow in your footsteps.

I believe that the soul is eternal and that we will meet again. Until then, I wish you happiness and peace. I hope that you find integrity and value in all your endeavors. Love is the strongest force on Earth. Please know that I love you very much, unconditionally and forever.

A father writing to his children on his eightieth birthday:

As I look back on my life, certain themes keep recurring. The quest for truth is one. The need to love and be loved is another. The desire to make a difference in the world is still another. Have I succeeded? It all depends on your perspective. Truth is not always comfortable, love can be difficult, and making a difference in the world sometimes seems impossible. I don’t regret the struggle. Indeed, I welcome it, because it has brought meaning to my life. This family was created in love, and I am grateful to be your father. Without love, where would we be? Without you, who would I be?
